Coltonâs weekday soccer games were played early, because the soccer field wasnât lit. That meant a lot of parents couldnât make it until the game was half-over, Meredithâs father included. But her mother was there. And theyâd brought Tess, of course. Beth was there, too, but this time she sat well away from the family. With her friends.
Colton won. Another shutout, five to nothing. Meredith heard several parents making plans for the state championship. âWe can do it this year,â she heard one father say. âWhat with Stoney coaching and the kids weâve got on board, no one will be able to stop us!â
Us, she thought. As if weâre all down there playing on the field. As if all of our identities are caught up in the score of a game.
Stoney disengaged himself from his victorious team and congratulatory parents almost immediately, and came to her. He was dressed all in black today, which only set off his male blond beauty more. He was obviously pleased with the game; she could see it in his eyes, in his smile, in the way his body moved. All stretched out and taut. There was something about a man like Stoney, after a win. He became, somehow, more male. The civilized edges were peeled away, so that he revealed a different nature, more predatory, raw, basic. More sexual.
And she, fool that she was, was caught up in that male excitement. It was all she could do to sit there calmly, not letting him know that her blood was racing wildly, that once again she was feeling that rush of mad expectancy that had her world turned upside down, only this time it was stronger than before, more inviting, more terrifying. She felt the pull of him as an irresistible force. Decide for me, she thought almost wildly. Donât ask. Tell me what to do next. She sat, still and waiting, watching him from her spot on the bottom bleacher.
âHello,â he said, smiling down at her.
âHello, Stoney,â she said gravely back.
âYou came,â he said. His eyes were like the sun, burning her.
âI told you I would.â
Roger came over. âCan I get a ride home with you?â he said obliviously to Meredith. He looked so friendly and open that the boy she had been discussing with Beth on Sunday could have been another person.
âSure,â she agreed, her eyes touching Roger only briefly before returning of their own accord to Stoney. He was watching her with steady intensity. Then, with a slight shudder she broke the spell and stood, looking around for Tess, who had, as usual, disappeared.
The crowd was leaving. All around her she could sense the excitement of the win, the jubilation of victory. She spotted Tess, chattering a million miles a minute with another young friend.
âRoger, go get your niece,â Stoney ordered.
Roger looked surprised. âHow come?â
âJust go,â Stoney said. And Roger, looking at Stoney and Meredith with sudden understanding in his youthfully narrowed eyes, went.
âThat wasnât necessary,â Meredith said stiffly.
âI just wanted a few minutes with you, without your little brother breathing down our necks.
